SUMMARY:Mindful Birding at Historic Bethabara Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful and reflective time at Historic Bethabara Park\, where we will blend birdwatching with mindfulness practices to deepen our connection to nature. Whether you’re an experienced birder or a curious beginner\, this event invites you to slow down\, tune in\, and engage fully with the natural world. \nMindfulness is a practice that involves paying attention to the present moment with compassion and nonjudgement\, and practicing mindfulness in nature is known to decrease stress and increase feelings of interconnection with others. Our theme on this outing will focus on grounding and presence\, so we will learn techniques to cultivate more awareness in the present moment\, such as mindful listening\, mindful walking\, and mindful breathing. While listing bird species is not our focus\, we will be observing them closely and learning about local species and ecology as an anchor to the present moment. \nAll ages and experience levels with birding and mindfulness are welcome\, and families are encouraged to join. You can expect an introduction on mindfulness\, a slow\, guided walk\, time for reflection in nature\, and space to share your experiences with others. \nThe outing is free\, but we do ask that you register to reserve your spot here: https://app.amilia.com/store/en/city-of-winston-salem/api/Activity/Detail?activityId=yege6gp

SUMMARY:Plant This\, Not That: Using Native Plants to Help with Erosion Control
DESCRIPTION:Stop the wash-away and start a sanctuary! Join us for an essential workshop on Soil Stabilization and Native Planting\, where we explore how to turn eroding landscapes into thriving ecosystems. Whether you’re dealing with a steep backyard slope or a patchy garden bed\, the secret to a stable landscape lies just beneath the surface. Space is limited – registration is required. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nIn this hands-on session\, we will cover: \n\n\nEngineering with Roots: How deep-rooted native plants act as “biological rebar” to hold soil in place better than any retaining wall. \n\n\nThe Erosion Solution: Techniques for slowing down rainwater runoff to prevent nutrient loss and soil depletion. \n\n\nPollinator Partnerships: Selecting specific North Carolina native species that stabilize the earth while providing vital nectar and habitat for bees\, butterflies\, and birds. \n\n\nWhy Native Plants?\nUnlike common turf grass\, which has shallow roots\, native perennials and shrubs can reach depths of several feet. This creates a complex underground network that filters water and anchors the ground during heavy storms. \n\nWho Should Attend?\n\n\nHomeowners struggling with runoff or muddy yards. \n\n\nGardeners looking to support local biodiversity. \n\n\nCommunity members interested in sustainable land management. \n\n\nTake home a native seed packet and a custom planting guide to get started on your own property! \nLimit 1 plant per household\, while supplies last\, must register. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:YRK and Town of Lewisville Paddle - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:**EVENT IS CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER** \nCome enjoy an early paddle on the Yadkin River with the Yadkin Riverkeeper and hosted by the Town of Lewisville. The section from Old 421 to Huntsville access is so close and yet feels so far away. Paddling it in the early spring is a great way to see further into the woods before the foliage cloaks the landscape. This easy paddling will have a few quick spots but leaves much time to enjoy the natural area so close to Winston-Salem and Lewisville. We will check in at the Park at Old 421 at 1 pm and unload any gear that we are taking on the river. After shuttling cars to the take out\, we’ll hop on the water. After we have completed the section we will load up and make sure paddlers get to their cars while basking in the enjoyment of another great day on the water. Paddlers are encouraged to bring their own boats. We will have a limited number of boats to use if you do not have your own.   Please sign up here! https://www.yadkinriverkeeper.org/events/2026/3/28/yrk-lewisville-paddle \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Creek Crawl at Bethania's Black Walnut Bottom
DESCRIPTION:NC Sierra Club Foothills Group will host a fun and informative creek crawl along Bethania’s Black Walnut Bottom Trail\, where creeks feed into Muddy Creek. We will be joined by Danica Heflin of PTRC’s Stormwater SMART.We will meet at the picnic tables beside the Bethania visitor center for an overview of the creeks of Wachovia. We will then hike the Black Walnut Bottom Trail and see what makes a healthy creek\, explore the area bordering the creek\, and consider why the Moravians made their second settlement here.\n \nAlong the hike\, we will search a creek for macro-invertebrates whose presence will tell us about the water quality. In water quality\, “buggy is better.” Anyone wishing to join in this activity must have boots or water footwear and expect wet and muddy conditions. Towels and spare socks and shoes are recommended. The trail is 1.4 miles in length and rated easy by the Foothills Group.\nMore details of the area can be found at http://townofbethania.org/trails/black-walnut-bottom-trail/. Register by sending an email to Henry Fansler at henryfansler@windstream.net or 336-473-0283.
