The Junior Rangers is an ongoing self-guided program that you can pick up at the Marina Office. It is designed for Children 13 and under, however, anyone can participate. Visit this impressive facility near the Yadkin River and witness the dedicated team who ensure drinking water is delivered safely throughout Forsyth County and beyond. A presentation on the water treatment process will be followed by an exclusive tour of the plant, plus free gifts and prize drawings. No RSVP is needed for this family-friendly event with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities, scheduled to last 90 minutes.
A Walking Guide to the Trees of Old Salem

Take a guided walk through Old Salem and learn to identify native trees while discovering some of their historical uses.
Owing to the soil-retaining properties of their extensive root systems, the value of trees in maintaining water quality cannot be understated. Join Adam Tran, Extension Master Gardener Volunteer for N.C. Cooperative Extension, as he leads a tour of Old Salem’s native trees, discussing their role in the landscape, distinguishing characteristics, and both modern-day and historical uses for the wonderful diversity of trees in the Piedmont. The tour will wind through the beautiful historic setting of Old Salem and the Salem Creek watershed, identifying twenty-seven native trees along the way. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Salem Creek at the Gateway Nature Preserve: Geology, Biology & History

During a walk around the Gateway Nature Preserve we will see how the creek flows and the major features of a meandering stream. We will see what lives in and near the creek and what the river deposits can tell us about the underlying bedrock as well as more recent human activities. And we will consider how Salem Creek served as a source of power for processing grain in the nineteenth century. All ages welcome, though children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
